Job Purpose:
The Senior Director – Software Engineering is responsible for managing a portfolio of product teams, each delivering software solutions into the overall PAREXEL Product family. The Senior director is accountable for delivery, quality, control of budget, strategic planning, resource management and driving continual improvements into the teams.

Delivery
  • Fully accountable for the delivery of the product teams within their portfolio.
  • Works with functions outside of engineering to ensure work commences with clear and robust estimates and clarity of requirement
  • Utilizes Project Managers / BAs and other shared functions to monitor and control the deliveries
  • Ensure all delivery is to a defined, measurable and agreed quality
Budget
  • Controls the approved budgets for the engineering teams, covering non-discretionary spend, product investment budget and customer funded deliveries
Team Management
  • Define and organize effective operating structures to meet the changing needs of the business
  • Balance resource supply and demand
  • Ensure that all staff are suitably qualified and experienced to undertake the work required
  • Mentor and develop junior staff
R&D
  • Continually monitor and improve team effectiveness through the practical implementation of leadership experience
  • Assess and adopt emerging technical approaches that support improvement or efficiency (e.g. BDD / Cloud/Automation)
  • Drive the effectiveness of the Agile and SAFe frameworks
Strategy
  • Work with the VP Engineering to define the engineering departmental strategy
Engineering Authority
  • Act as the senior engineering governance authority for all work undertaken by the teams. This responsibility includes ensuring that what is delivered is what is required, that the product meets any regulatory requirements and that product safety has been appropriately considered and managed
Local leadership
  • Depending on the location of this role it may be the case that the holder of this role will take on a regional leadership role. This would include dealing with local site / country leadership, taking overall responsibility of resourcing, organization and staffing outside of their direct delivery portfolio and having a wider local governance responsibility.


Skills:
  • Strong team leadership skills and influencing skills
  • A robust technical background, having worked directly within one of the main technical SDLC roles (e.g. Developer, tester, BA)
  • Excellent communication skills operating at all levels of the business
  • Ability to plan and manage multiple and potentially distributed teams with different and varied work
  • Strong people management and development skills
  • Solid financial and commercial awareness

Qualifications

Knowledge and Experience:
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience of the Product Development Lifecycle
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience of using Agile methods. (SAFe is desirable)
  • Experience of managing multiple delivery teams in a global organization
  • Have had responsibility for multi-million dollar engineering budgets
  • A proven track record of delivering of complex systems
  • Experience of selecting, contracting and managing third parties
  • Experience of delivering software within a regulated environment (desirable)
  • Understanding of Project lifecycles
  • Experience of developing and mentoring staff
  • Experience managing supply and demand in a structured environment
