Engineering Manager

The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and mentoring the software engineering team, enabling each software engineer to grow and develop in their careers. They will play a key role in broader architectural decisions for the AI Labs platform and suite of applications, working closely with the Head of ML Product, Head of ML Services, and tech leads to design and maintain our systems. We are looking for a trustworthy and proactive engineering manager with many years’ experience as a successful IC and proven leadership skills. This person can expect to work on several projects at the same time, build and manage teams of engineers with different disciplines, and coordinate with other managers.

Key Accountabilities:
Architect and contribute code to software infrastructure
  • Design high-quality, effective data stores to support our applications
  • Develop back-end / server-side software to serve application requests, query databases, and format and deliver data
  • Design and implement performant APIs between applications and our data warehouse
  • Support development of front-end software and user experiences using the latest application programming frameworks, libraries and languages
  • Own complete life cycle of application databases for a product, from user management, DDL, permissions, performance tuning, and backups
  • Create and maintain application documentation to enable other engineers and data scientists to utilize the stack
  • Review and improve the code of engineers to enhance quality and security
  • Guide engineers to build unit tests, end to end tests, performance tests, and automated tests to ensure high code quality
  • Collaborate with engineers to design, implement, and document new software engineering techniques and strategies
  • Work with product management and quality assurance to test and validate completed features and bug fixes before deploying to the appropriate environments
  • Understand customer, product and user requirements to develop, test, and ship software applications that meet their needs
Contribute to Product and Customer Satisfaction
  • Collaborate with Product Management to define and implement features to satisfy customer requirements
  • Partner with other engineers to maintain quality work and anticipate problems
  • Lead daily standups, sprint planning meetings, retrospectives, and quarterly and annual planning, and ad hoc check-in meetings to ensure we are delivering to customer needs, and identifying potential roadblocks and solutions
Technical Leadership
  • Provide technical, thought, and process leadership to engineering team(s), offering guidance and mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers
  • Architect and implement key systems that stand the test of time, and can be easily maintained
  • Lead architecture reviews of components of the software, and offer overall tech leadership to the engineering team
  • Contribute to the overall goals around application prototyping, applied ML research, and library development direction
  • Solve the most complex engineering challenges on application stack, and mentor team members to do the same
  • Debate and defend architectural decisions with well-reasoned arguments, including via supporting your ICs and tech leads in their decision-making
Hiring and Retention
  • Hire, retain, and grow an excellent group of self-motivated, curious, and technically capable software engineers
  • Lead the interview and recruitment process to further grow the team when needed
  • Work closely with each individual to develop, maintain and track progress towards their professional goals. Ensure consistent and timely positive and constructive feedback to enable the team member to grow in their careers

Qualifications

Skills:
  • Demonstrated abilities in hiring, leading, retaining, and motivating a high performing team of software engineers
  • Ability to provide technical leadership, drive architecture design choices, and mentor engineering team members
  • Strong CS fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems
  • Proficiency with Python
  • Experience with API development in Python Flask or similar
  • Broad skillset with database technologies including ElasticSearch, Neo4j, and SQL
  • Ability to monitor database uptime and performance
  • Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Deep Learning, building and deploying NLP systems a nice to have, but not required
  • Ability to work under tight timelines and display calm under pressure.
  • Able to thrive in demanding, rapidly changing and highly cross-functional work environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent negotiation and presentation skills
  • Strong technical knowledge and ability to understand the details and yet still cultivate the strategic vision
  • Ability to manage multiple and varied tasks with enthusiasm and prioritize workload with attention to detail
  • Professional attitude, self-motivated, client focused work ethic with ability handling confidential matters and data
  • Ability to analyze business needs and act decisively; demonstrated ability to make prudent decisions to achieve desired outcomes
Knowledge and Experience:
  • Strong knowledge and at least 8+ years’ experience spanning technology, enterprise software, life sciences, clinical research, machine learning, and/or broader healthcare industries
  • Demonstrated experience as a software engineering individual contributor—full stack, frontend, and/or backend--for 6+ years
  • Demonstrated experience in engineering management for 2+ years
  • Demonstrated experience hiring and leading cross-functional teams to deliver outcomes-oriented software products and services to large enterprise customers
  • Strong experience with software engineering, software engineering tools and usage, data analysis, data processing architectures, and modern web applications
  • Track record of enabling and developing the skills and careers of direct reports
  • Hands on experience performing schema and data migrations in a multi-tenant environment
  • Experience with AWS and Docker
  • Experience and/or interest in working with sensitive and/or HIPAA-protected data
  • Experience with the following tools: JIRA, Confluence, Docker, Jenkins, Git, Github, Sumologic, AWS S3, AWS EC2, Whitesource
Education:
  • Educated to degree level in engineering or computer science or other relevant qualification/experience.
  • Advanced / graduate degree a plus but not required
